Britain’s popular television series, Death in Paradise, is based on Robert Thorogood’s mystery/thriller books, and in the second installment, The Killing of Polly Carter, DI Richard Poole has been called to the scene of what appears to be the suicide of a top model. Unfortunately, there are several inconsistencies, and Poole is convinced that it is murder. Several characters are suspicious, especially, Polly’s twin sister, who was crippled in an accident partially caused by Polly several years before.

Thorogood sets the scene in a beautiful tropical island paradise, where Poole has been relocated by his department against his wishes; Poole thinks he would be happier in England, where he grew up. Besides the main story of the murder of Polly, Poole’s parents’ relationship is in crisis, and his mother decides to come to the island to sort it out.

For Americans, the word usage, idioms, and British references make the book charming. The English do things quite differently, and that adds to the fun of reading this book. While it is a serious thriller, and is well-written, the differences add a little humor and interest to the solving of the murder.

Thorogood is an excellent writer, and his descriptions of the island make it so readers will want to visit. He is also good at characterizing the various suspects, so until the very end, readers may have suspicions, but will not be certain who the murderer really is.

All-in-all, The Killing of Polly Carter will appeal to most thriller aficionados; there is no graphic sex or violence, so it’s suitable for almost everyone. This book is recommended reading, and because it is a British publication, is easier to obtain from Amazon UK, although it may be offered on Amazon US in the future.
