Title: Speaking in Bones
Author: Kathy Reichs
Published: 2015, Bantam
No. of Pages: 320
Cover Price: $28.00 Hardcover, $9.99 Paperback, $9.99 Kindle

Tempe Brennan fans will welcome this 18th installment in the series, Speaking in Bones by Best-selling author, Kathy Reichs. When a cybersleuth comes to Tempe with a tape recording of a distressed girl, whom she believes is one that has been missing for over three years, Tempe decides it’s worth investigating and gets involved in not only a possible murder, but also a strange religious cult broken off from the Catholic church, and the discovery of bones that don’t belong to the supposed victim on the tape. Tempe just happens to have some unidentified bones sitting in her office that the cybersleuth believes belong to the girl on the tape.

Reichs is a master at creating suspense, and adding humor, humanism, and fun to her novels. Tempe’s on-again off-again romance with Andrew Ryan happens to be on, and he wants her to marry him. Tempe’s mother, who is a bit crazy, plays a part in this novel, and adds some relief when the suspense gets too much.

As usual, Tempe’s life is in danger during different times, and it seems she always pushes the limit with her job. This certainly adds interest, and makes the book very difficult to put down. Reichs is excellent in making her characters seem like they are real, and it’s easy to actually “see” the characters since Reichs provides vivid descriptions. In this novel, there are several religious zealots whose personalities ring true, and members of the cult that are reminiscent of some we’ve all heard about in the news.

All told, Speaking in Bones is an excellent addition to the series, and it’s fun to read. It is recommended for all Temperance Brennan fans, as well as those who enjoy forensic thrillers.
