Maggie Gardiner is very meticulous when gathering evidence from crime scenes; although she is the fingerprint specialist, she also gathers other trace evidence. Maggie has recently collected evidence from three murder scenes and the same fibers and hairs have been found at each. However, the murder victim’s cases aren’t related, and except for a young girl who was brutally murdered and left in a cemetery, the victims are all career criminals who have somehow gotten by with little or no consequences, leaving them to commit their crimes again and again.

Jack Renner is a detective for the same police department as Maggie; he has his own agenda, however, and has his own way of getting criminals off the street. Maggie has him worried, since she is so thorough, and he must find a way to stop her.

That Darkness is a very suspenseful novel by bestselling author, Lisa Black. Both Gardiner and Renner are likeable protagonists, and Black has characterized them well. While their interaction is limited at first, it becomes more frequent, and as the suspense builds, readers will be on the edge of their seats wondering just how far each character will go to solve the cases, and whether the truth will actually come out.

That Darkness is a fascinating psychological thriller that explores the worlds of right and wrong along with vengeance. Who are the good guys here, and is someone overstepping their bounds? With Jack’s point of view, can he go on as usual? Can Maggie ignore what she sees and continue to do her job with a clear conscience?

This novel is very unique, since the main characters may not be what they seem. It is recommended for anyone who gets tired of the same scenarios and outcomes in the hundreds of thrillers on offer. The writing is excellent, and the events will make readers actually think. The book is also quite entertaining, and is not easy to put down.
