Digital Book Series Project Graphics

Digital Book Series Project Graphics
In this tutorial, we will discuss the graphics and other planning for a marketing campaign for the Children’s Storybook Template Series of books released to support the Children's Storybook Template for use in iBooks AuthorR.

When the free user guide was released in the iBooks Store in June, the purple spider character became the visual icon for the Children’s Storybook Template Series and he took his deserved place on the front of the user guide book cover.

Of course, the spider character will continue to be the icon for the series of subsequent books in the iBooks Store, but we also wanted to change the new book covers somewhat. Our next book will be another how-to about using widgets in iBooks Author. We wanted the graphics to reflect how the magic of widgets “brings iBA books to life”. It was decided that a group of stars shooting from an open book would be a great way to visualize this concept.

Working in Illustrator, we drew an open book with a few loose pages flying upwards. Next we added the shooting stars, keeping the color scheme set for the book series. Finally, we added a new graphic of our spider mascot. He has a different pose from the first book cover, as he is standing on top of the rising book pages and has a pleasant surprise on his face.

As the marketing campaign called for how-to videos about using the template, as well as marketing videos, it was decided to animate the shooting star graphics in a 10 second opener that could be added to each video.

Previously, we had used Apple Motion to create our YouTube videos. For this project, we wanted to experiment with Motion's built-in text animations and sequence behaviors. We also wanted to use the import feature that allows us to import a layered .psd image. Each of the shooting stars will be placed on its own layer in Photoshop before import.
