Title: Field of Graves
Author: J.T. Ellison
Published: June 14, 2016, MIRA
No. of Pages: 368
Cover Price: $26.99 Hardcover, $11.99 Kindle

Those who have read several of J.T. Ellison’s novels in the Taylor Jackson series, are already familiar with the characters, but, even though there are several subsequent novels, Field of Graves gives the background of each of the main characters, as well as telling a fascinating story. Taylor Jackson is a troubled police lieutenant who has been off work since shooting a suspect in her home. The suspect, who turned out to be a fellow police officer who was trying to kill her, was actually killed in self-defense. Jackson, however, is experiencing graphic nightmares and panic attacks ever since the shooting, and has gotten a bad rap after she had previously discovered that there were several dirty cops in the department. While she went forward cautiously with the investigation of the dirty cops, her resentful peers weren’t about to forgive. Now there is a serial killer on the loose, and Taylor is in charge of the investigation. Her boss, as a favor to his friend in the FBI, agrees to bring in an experienced FBI profiler, Dr. John Baldwin, who has been on a self-imposed sabbatical and who has settled into a deep depression, has become a hopeless drunk, and is trying to find the courage to commit suicide. He had been working a case where he had had a hunch about a suspect he was sure was guilty. During the apprehension of the suspect, several of his colleagues were shot and killed; he feels a huge amount of guilt because some issues have come up making it look like he was wrong about the suspect, and the deaths were unwarranted.

Field of Graves takes readers back to the beginning of the series, and gives a good background on the main characters who will be featured in subsequent novels. Those who are reading this novel before the earlier published novels will appreciate knowing the background of the characters; those who have read the novels in the series may not fully appreciate the book because they are already familiar. However, the storyline is good, the writing is good, and the novel is one worth reading. It will make readers want to pick up the other novels in the series. The book is fast moving, easy to understand, and the characters are likeable enough to keep readers wanting more. There are dozens of twists and turns, plenty of suspense, and a surprise ending, making this a recommended novel.
