Color Digi Stamps with SketckBook Copic Markers

In the last tutorial, we examined the SketchBook workspace and customized the workspace, by adding the Copic Color Library and Copic Marker brushes. Now, we are ready to open our digital stamp .png file in to the canvas and color it with the digital Copic Markers. Use the link below to download the free digi stamp.

We will start a new project that is 5.5 inches wide, 4.25 inches tall and has a resolution of 300 dpi. Notice that the Layer Editor has a background layer and one default layer (see screenshot). Let's add the digital stamp.

  1. From the Menubar, click File - Add Image, to add the digi stamp to the canvas.

As the image is added to a new Layer 2 at the top of the Layer Editor. Let's rename this layer to "stamp".

  2. Click in the center of the layer to open the layer tools. Click the Rename Layer icon and change the name of the layer (see screenshot).

  3. Repeat the previous step for the layer below. Rename Layer 1 to "color" (see screenshot).

You will also see the Transform Puck (see screenshot). This digi stamp is already sized to fit within the canvas. But, if your stamp isn't the perfect size, you can use the Transform Puck to move, scale or rotate the image. When done, click the X to close the puck.

We will color our digi stamp on the Color layer. Let's start by coloring one of the light bulbs. We want the bulbs to have an orange tint to the glass and bright yellow in the center for the light. The Copic markers work just like real alcohol markers, requiring several passes with the marker to build up to full saturation of color.

  4. Select the Copic Medium Broad Nib brush from the Brush Palette (see screenshot).

  5. Click the icon at the top of the Brush Palette to open the Brush Properties window (see screenshot). Set the Size, Density and Slant as you wish.

  6. In the Copic Color Library, drag the Color Set slider to the YR Color Set. Select the YR68 Orange color chip (see screenshot).

  7. Color the inner edge of one of the light bulbs, flicking the brush toward the center of the bulb (see screenshot).

  8. Click the Colorless Blender icon at the top of the Library panel to switch the marker to a colorless blender. Blend the orange color, leaving most of the color along the edge and fading toward the center (see screenshot). To switch back to your marker color, click the color chip again.

  9. We will need this color again, so drag the color chip down in to the Custom Set area (see screenshot).

  10. Move the Color Set slider to the Y Color Set and select the Y11 Pale Yellow color chip. Color the center of the bulb (see screenshot). Drag the color chip to the Custom Set area.

Note: If you need to clean up your coloring, you can turn your marker in to an eraser from the Lagoon (see screenshot). Click on the Brushes icon in the Lagoon and then click the Hard Eraser icon. To switch back to the marker, select it again in the Brush Palette.

  11. Repeat the previous steps for each light bulb and the lantern (see screenshot).

  12. Paint each bulb base with a dark green color such as G28 Ocean Green.

  13. Click File - Save to save the project in the Photoshop .tiff or Photoshop .psd file format. This will keep the layers unflattened.
