Inga Madsen Christmas 2017 cover

The cover of Inga Madsen's 2017 Christmas Ornament book shows an asymmetrical tatted heart which is very "avant-garde" in construction. It is a wonderful example how we can modernize our traditional tatting designs and find a new metier to explore. From Inga's heart to the angel with a spiral lace body to an artful 3-D bird, she challenges us to explore possibilities in design.

This sample of the presentation of a design shows a clear photo of the finished ornament. The adjacent diagram guides us in recreating it. Note the techniques used: ds, hs, picot, beaded picot, regular join, down join, chains and the use of a spiral Josephine knot/ring for a decorative chain.

The cover and back cover of Inga Madsen's 2016 Christmas Ornament book shows traditional holiday-themed tatted pieces. The ever welcome angel and the colorful balls decorated with tatting are a must for every holiday. Her mini tatted bells are prepared as a set of two. The design is so basic one could tat them by the dozens as gifts. And they are perfect as wedding bells decorations, too.

This sample diagram of a tatted ball cover on a round holiday ball shows a regular 6-pt snowflake design with a great twist. Except for the joining picots, the picots are all double picots. Both the order of progression for tatting and the ds count is given in the diagram. Very little text is needed for these designs.

In the back of both books that are photo tutorials for special techniques used in the designs. For example, floating rings, split rings, daisy picots, cluny tatting, block tatting et al.

Inga Madsen is a well-known member of the Danish Tatting Guild. She is the author of Tatted Animals, and 12 Tatted Fairy Tales which is a fairy tale for tatters come true! It is charming, heart-warming and exciting! What a marvelous inspiration for tatters of every age. And it is a good read for tatters and toddlers alike.

Ed. Note: I was very pleased to add Inga's new books to my personal tatting library. And I was surprised and excited to see in the back of one book a display of her tatting tools and shuttles. One of them was crafted by my husband, Richard Seitz!
