Naomi and her estranged sister Charlotte got a great deal on an African Safari, and are excited to experience the animals and the beauty of Africa in Sleuth on Safari, the first installment in The Traveler Cozy Mystery Series. The sisters are completely opposite, and Naomi is worried that traveling with her sister may ruin her vacation. She doesn’t need to worry, though, since, after dinner the first night and after meeting the other guests, who are unique, to say the least, she discovers one of the guests, Dr. Higgins, dead. The staff at the lodge as well as the other guests are sure it was an accident, and that a herd of hyenas killed the guest, who was a very difficult and unpleasant, to say the least. Naomi, however, is sure he was murdered and the hyenas simply covered up the evidence. So, Naomi, while enjoying the safari adventures, begins investigating the murder.

While this is a cozy, and void of any graphic violence, language, or sex, there is a bit of building suspense, mostly due to Naomi being quite pushy and taking risks while trying to discover who the murderer is. She is also unprepared, because, unlike her sister who is relentless at reading the brochures and following the rules, Naomi hasn’t bothered to read or learn what is expected of guests. Kennedy’s characters are well-developed – some likeable, and so not quite so likeable – but typical of a tour group. There are two teenage boys with their mother who are more interested in the lack of internet and poor cell signal than seeing the animals. There are also some couples with what seems to be health, marital, and fidelity issues, so the guests are quite interesting.

Kennedy is a good storyteller and the story is easy-to-follow and fun to read. There are some close calls with animals and Naomi and a dangerous snake, and it seems that the author must have been on a safari because the scenarios ring true.

For those who enjoy cozies and like a bit of suspense, this is a fun series.
