Art in Ocean's 8 Movie 2018
With an all-star cast, this film is about a fictional jewelry heist at the Met, with highlights from the museum's collection. I will discuss works, some I recognize from first glance, others new finds.
In the movie, the recognizable stars about to attend the Met/Cartier Gala are Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter.
One of the most impressive courtyards in the Met is that of the American Wing with a gold patinaed bronze statue of the Roman goddess of the moon and the hunt, "Diana" by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
Next, a glimpse into the Arms and Armor Department.
A scene from a horse market in France, "The Horse Fair" (1852-155) is Rosa Bonheur’s best-known painting.
Maybe you have had a similar experience to mine - Henri Rousseau's work spoke to me at MoMA. Here is "Le Douanier" or "The Repast of the Lion" (1907) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
If you can keep up with the cameraperson, in the same Gallery 825 (Post Impressionism) is Vincent van Gogh's "Self Portrait with a Straw Hat" (1907) with "The Potato Peeler" on the obverse.
An earlier version of van Gogh's "Self Portrait with Straw Hat" (1887) is from the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum (DIA).
Next is one from "Group of Bears" (1932, cast 1963) in Gallery 700 by American sculptor Paul Manship.
I am guessing the next work is "Figure of an Eagle" (1800-1830), a representation of the American bald eagle.
The work of Johannes Vermeer is unmistakable, "Study of a Young Woman" (1667). Always delightful!
What I believe is a female sculpture from the Department of Africa, Oceanic, and Ancient American art.
Next is Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani's muse and companion "Jeanne Hebuterne" (1919), striking a pose. [Not on view.]
After sharing living space with fellow Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh in the painting by the same name "Yellow House" (1888) from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Paul Gauguin would eventually settle in a French Pacific island. Here we see "Two Tahitian Women" (1899) in Gallery 825.
The American artist John White Alexander lived in Paris during the 1890s when he painted "Repose" (1895), a portrait of a reclining American dancer from the Folies Bergère in Paris, in the Art Nouveau style.
The next artwork is "The Veteran in a New Field" (1865) by American Winslow Homer. [Not on view.]
As this film is a comedy, they even incorporated a transfer of paintings, as British artist Banksy pulled off this caper in 2005.
