In the 15th novel in the bestselling Private series, Private Moscow, One of Jack Morgan’s old friends from the marines asks him to come to the New York Stock Exchange where his company is being traded for the first time. Jack gets the impression that his friend want to tell him something, but as his friend is murdered by an assassin before he gets a chance to tell Jack. This is the first of several hits on citizens who don’t seem to be connected. As Jack works to solve the murder of his friend, he becomes involved in a deadly conspiracy in Moscow.

Jack Morgan is a great protagonist, having charm and many talents. He is in great physical shape and is able to chase the assassin several times, without losing his life, but coming up short every time. The supporting characters, both working in Private New York and Private Moscow are well-developed and add some Russian culture to the story. It seems that the author (or most likely the co-author) has done the research and the areas near Moscow including the streets, ring true so the readers can believe that the characters are actually in Russia and in Moscow. A bonus is that readers are introduced to Solyanka soup, which was intriguing (and a recipe on the internet made it possible to eat it while enjoying the novel).

While the story is not particularly feasible, it is easy to follow and readers won’t lose interest. In fact, they will be on the edge of their seat during most of the novel since the suspense starts building at the beginning and doesn’t stop until the end.

As is typical of James Patterson novels, this one is full of plenty of (comic book type) violence and tons of dead bodies. While the scenarios aren’t completely believable, it is very entertaining and gives readers plenty of time to escape from the real world.
