Cinco de Mayo History & Celebrations

Cinco de Mayo is more than dancing, parades and eating. Although that is fun too. Indeed it is--it is a celebration of freedom and unity. Cinco de Mayo or The 5th Of May celebrates the winning of the Battle Of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, which makes it a day of great political and military importance.

Fiesta's are held to celebrate Mexico's unity, freedom and independence. You don't have to be Mexican to get out and embrace the joy and learn the history of Cinco de Mayo.

Celebrate

Take your family to see special exhibits, take a virtual tour online or visit a Mexican restaurant for a taste of Mexican cooking. Look for Chicken Mole on the menu, it's made with unsweetened chocolate. Chicken in a sauce made with chocolate? Yes! Try this easy Chicken Mole recipe. Absolutely Delicious.

If you like to cook, visit BellaOnline's Mexican Food site for recipes and share an authentic meal with family and friends at home. Sharing a romantic dinner for two? End the evening with Kahlua coffee liqueur and a good movie.

Rent or buy Like Water for Chocolate, a movie (and a book) about love, old traditions and food. Also read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros or Woman Hollering Creek by the same author.

See Like Water For Chocolateand House On Mango Streetboth available from Amazon.com.

While searching for reliable information concerning Cinco of de Mayo, I came across an excellent site, MexOnline.com. It has news, business information, weather, money exchange rates, travel and holiday history. Take some time to visit this most interesting and useful site. You will find recipes there as well. Also, read an insightful interview with author Sandra Cisneros. See Related Links.
