Book Reprinted by House of White Birches (Tatting)

House of White Birches (HWB) Tatting Books Nos. 1 - 6

HWB is noted for reprinting many vintage tatting patterns during the '70's and '80's. They published a series of 6 tatting books during this time. Tatting Books No. 1 through 6. There has been discussion that a seventh book might have been reprinted, however, with the help of Marla Laux from DRG Pattern Service, I have been able to confirm that there was no seventh reprint in the series. I believe the confusion arose from the fact that the first book reprinted in the series was Richardson's Tatting Book #7. Here is the list of books and the original sources.

#2 = reprint of "Priscilla Tatting Book #2"

#3 = reprint of "Priscilla Tatting Book #1" [1909] with the cover and a possible few pages in the back from to Tatting Book No. 35 by Anne Orr

#4 = reprint of "Old and New Designs in Tatting and Crochet Braid" by Sophie T. La Croix

#5 = reprint of "Priscilla Tatting Book #3"

#6 = reprint of "40 Original designs" by Nellie Hall Youngburg

There are more tatting books published by HWB but they were not part of this series. "Lessons in Tatting" (1981) and "Old Time Tatting" (1982) which is a partial reprint of Anne Orr #13, #35 and Star Book #2. It also contains patterns from Myrtle Hamilton's columns like "Shuttlebutt with Myrtle" and 19th & 20th century newspaper and needle work magazines.

The story of HWB is a complicated one. My research shows that the original company, TOWER PRESS, INC. in DANVERS, MA, 01923, published a number of magazines.

Although unable to pinpoint the exact year, the Muselman family, aka House of White Birches, purchased Tower Press around 1980. Now known as the DRG network of companies, the Muselman business began in Berne, Indiana in 1925 with the Economy Printing Concern. The DRG network today comprises many names known to needle artists of all mediums.
