BET Gospel Explosion a Success

Hundreds gathered at Paramount King's Dominion in Doswell, VA, for BET's annual BET Gospel Explosion. The event, held on Saturday, the 16th and Sunday, the 17th, was set against the backdrop of the area's most popular amusement park.
Saturday's event included a concert by Kurt Carr & the Kurt Carr Singers, Tye Tribbett & G.A., Debra Killings, 7 Sons of Soul, and Izzy. Sunday's event included a service with the pastor of Empowerment Temple, Dr. Jamal-Harrison Bryant, and a closing concert with Kurt Carr & the Kurt Carr Singers, Ted & Sheri, 7 Sons Of Soul, Debra Killings, and Izzy.
The event brought together some of the hottest acts in gospel on one stage. The scorching hot weekend (with temperatures in the 90s) was the perfect time and place to give God praise. Homegrown artist Izzy opened the show with his urban style of praise. He was followed by Verity recording artist Debra Killings. One of gospel's neo-soul artists set an atmosphere of worship with "Jesus" along with a worship medley with Donnie McClurkin's "It Is To You" (recorded By Byron Cage) and "More Than Anything" from Lamar Campbell. She showed off her consummate bass guitar skills on her signature cut, "Message In The Music".
D.C.'s own 7 Sons Of Soul wowed the audience with their dynamic harmonizing skills and electric stage presence. Flowing smoothly from contemporary gospel to traditional quartet music, they sung songs from their Verity debut, a self-titled project. Songs like "Amazing Grace" and "He's Coming Back" brought people to their feet. They also did a short tribute to mentor Ronald Winans who passed away last month. They played a recording of "Wherever I Go", sung by Winans from The Winans' ground- breaking 1990 project, Return. Look for the 7 Sons Of Soul's upcoming project to drop in the near future.
Gospel's newest sensation, Sony's Tye Tribbett & Greater Anointing stunned the audience with their body-moving, ultra-electric performances of such jammin' tracks like "No Way" and "Mighty Long Way". A spirit of worship came over the place during the group's singing of the reverent "Everything". Not only did Tribbett sing and dance, but he spoke deliverance and healing over the audience.
Headlining the event was GospoCentric's gold-selling artist Kurt Carr & the Kurt Carr Singers. Braving the heat and the sun, Carr took sometime to talk with me before the concert. Quite busy with touring, he said that he's been going across the nation on a 25- church workshop tour. "Since the album came out in March, I had a vision that instead of doing a typical promotional tour, I would do seminars and workshops," said Carr. "I've been doing 3 days with some mega-churches - white churches, black churches and Hispanic churches. Not only have I had the chance to expose them to the music, but I've been able to expose them to what God has given me. I believe the essence of my gifting is what I do behind the scenes. Most people don't ever get to see that." Currently, he is getting ready to go on tour again with the "The One Church Tour" with Smokie Norful, RiZen, Vicki Yohe, and James Fortune & FIYA.
The songwriter of gospel's most popular hits hit the stage at the BET Gospel Explosion with "In The Sanctuary", "Reign", "Psalm 68 (Let God Arise)", and "God Great God". He also performed his mega- hit, "The Presence Of The Lord" with a remix twist - "My Time For God's Favor". The Spirit of the Lord swept through the place Saturday night making it a place where the King had true dominion.
