Remember the golden era of fashion when clothes were handmade with top of the line fabrics, a time when the quality of the garment was more important than the name on the label. Well, we are now in a different time, while there are many garments that are beautiful we are longing for the thrill of finding unique items that make us stand apart from the crowd. Most of us are searching for items that are made with a dedication to quality not quantity, which will lend a helping hand to many who have yet to discover their own style.
This may be a good time to turn to Vintage clothing shops. Now while Vintage shopping sounds like an effortless shopping experience. It takes stamina, clear ideas of the styles you’re after and a real serious love for seeking out fabulous fashion finds.
Shopping for Vintage clothing can be compared to searching for a needle in a haystack. Looking for the perfect shirt, skirt or slacks can be a labor of love and to get it right you must first become an expert on what the various shops in or around your area carry, what will you consider to be a good buy and how will you determine if the item you’re considering is even worth buying. A good way to do this is always look at little things like the seams, buttons, and linings. If these things are in poor condition then purchasing that item is a no, no. On the other hand if you notice a metal piece sewn into the hem to make the clothing hang better than that is a great sign and a great purchase.
When looking for exactly where to shop think outside the box. While we know that Vintage boutiques have clothing between one and two decades old, don’t ignore consignment and thrift shops they are full of unexpected surprises.
Some of the best buys you can come to expect from these shops are cashmere sweaters, anything leather, cocktail and evening dresses are just a few that can be named. When making a vintage purchase don’t forget that vintage sizing may be a bit different from what your used too. It may have been made to size, tailored from the original size to fit or it was made using European sizing. So dress comfortable and be prepared to try things on.
Gather up your girlfriends and get ready for some fun. Vintage shopping is not a marathon but it will be great for the long distance shopper. Be sure to take your eye for quality and your spirit for fun.
