Best Beaches in Spain

Guest Author - Teresa Szefler

France | Greece | Italy | Turkey

Spain’s islands and coasts of the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Bay of Biscay offer a wide variety of equally spectacular beaches. Topless sunbathing is widely acceptable on Spain’s beaches.

Islas Balearas (The Balearic Islands)
Located between Spain and the North Africa, these Mediterranean islands are infamous for their beaches, sunshine and nightlife.

* Mallorca - crowded beaches, especially in Palma de Mallorca

* Menorca - less crowded than Ibiza and Mallorca

* Formentera - this island’s secluded beaches and bays are accessible from Ibiza

* Ibiza - famous summer party island
- Playa d'en Bossa boasts many clubs and the longest sandy beach on the island
- Playa de Salinas boasts beach parties and great watersports
- Benirras is famous for sunset parties and bongo-playing hippies
- Playa Des Cavallet is the official nudist beach

Islas Canarias (Canary Islands)
Located off the coast of Africa, these islands are famous for their beaches and sunshine… but they are crowded.

* Fuerteventura
- Playa de Garcey boasts the American Star ocean liner shipwreck
- Lobos Island, located north of Fuerteventura, boasts a beautiful beach

* Lanzarote
- El Golfo (The Gulf) - the sand in the black sand lagoon volcanic crater contains particles peridot

* Tenerife
- Playa de las Americas boasts the most famous beaches on the island
- Puerto de la Cruz boasts the swimming pool complex of Costa de Martiánez, which includes a huge artificial lake known as Lago Martiánez

Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light)
This coastline runs along Spain’s south coast west of Gibraltar, along Andalusia’s Atlantic coast, to the border with Portugal. This area boasts consistently good weather and popular destinations including Cádiz, Seville, and the sandy beaches of Huelva.

* Tarifa - great windsurfing

Costa del Sol (Sun Coast)
This area of Spain boasts incredible weather, but the popular resort towns of Marbella, Málaga, and Torremolinos are crowded and overdeveloped. There are four private nudist beaches in Benalmádena, Estepona, Guadalmar and Torre del Mar.

* Marbella - the Avenida del Mar is one of Europe’s most famous promenades

Costa Verde (Green Coast)
This coastline runs along the north, along the Bay of Biscay, and includes the resorts of Gijón, Santander and San Sebastián in Basque Country.
