Do Teeth Whiteners Cause Cancer?

Previously the only way to whiten your teeth was by visiting a dentist, however; in the last decade things have changed and it has become as easy as walking to your nearest pharmacy. But the question arises are they safe?

The active ingredient in these products is either hydrogen peroxide or a derivative of hydrogen peroxide.

In 2004 a study from Georgetown University was published which linked oral cancer and tooth whiteners. The problem with this study was it was based on only two case studies. Both case studies were diagnosed with oral cancer and had used teeth whiteners in the prior to the diagnosis.

The media jumped over this news story; however failed to mention an important fact-the authors of the study admitted that the sample was too small and that because it was a retrospective study the information they collected was based on the individuals ability to recall the past. The positive side of this study is that it did prompt more research into the cancer and teeth whiteners’ connection.

In 2006, another study by Dr. Ian Monroe involving 4000 people was done. This study found no correlation between oral cancer and teeth whiteners, however it is noted that they should not be used by pregnant women because the effects on the fetus are unknown.

What else is adding to the confusion?

The standards are not the same around the globe. In order for a teeth whiteners to be effective the International Dental Health Foundation has found that the concentration needed to be effective as a whitener is at least 3.6% The European Union has a legal limit of the active ingredient Hydrogen Peroxide of 0.1 %. If the product has higher than this amount it is no longer classified as a cosmetic device. In North America the range of Hydrogen Peroxide is from 3-10%.

So although there appears to be no correlation between oral cancer and teeth whiteners there are still safety issues to consider.

Here are some tips if you do decide to use Over the Counter Teeth Whiteners

Tips

Consult your dentist first-they can recommend an over the counter product that is right for you.

Read and reread the directions carefully. Most of the damage that is done is by improper use of these products. This is because the product is only to be applied to your teeth area, NOT your gums. The same product that whitens your teeth can irritate your gums and cause peeling.

Leaving the product on longer does not mean your teeth will be whiter. Follow the recommended time on the instructions.

Whether you choose to use teeth whiteners or not, keep smiling it makes your face look better!
