Getting That Summer Glow

Getting That Summer Glow
Now is the perfect time to wear shorter skirts, open-toe shoes and skimpier tops, but all of this exposure may cause some of us to panic. In colder climates, winter may have done damage to our skin and we all have a few extra pounds we put on during those days of bulky sweaters, wool stockings and extra helpings.

Fear not, adjusting to the warmer weather involves some simple steps. Without experimenting with streaky self tanners or starving yourself, there are plenty of ways to improve your state of body and mind and achieve a healthy summer glow in no time. The best part is no sun exposure so wrinkles, sun spots and potential skin cancer are a non-issue.

Our overall health is reflected in the condition of our skin, so to obtain a summer glow, here are three basic tips.

First, look for creams with soy, such as Aveeno’s which also contains an SPF factor, as well as Soy shower foam and soaps that are excellent for cleansing and conditioning the skin. Soy not only gives a shiny glow to dull, tired-looking skin, but it also reduces inflammation, redness and dryness. It is good for all skin types and contains phytoestrogens, an estrogen-like compound that helps skin glisten.

Second, comes cardio. Exercise will work on your skin glands to create sweat which opens and closes your pores so acts as good exercise for your skin and circulation. Walk uphill for both cardiovascular and strength work. One to two times a week is a good start fro beginners. Just remember to stretch before and after in order to prevent injury.

And third comes water. We’ve all been told time and time again to drink plenty of water, to purify, cleanse and to keep hydrated, but here’s a great tip that can actually improve health skin condition and slow the aging process. Cut up some cucumbers, lemons and limes and place them in a pitcher with your water. Not only does it add a refreshing taste but it also contains important anti-oxidants.

Anti-oxidants, of course, also contribute to the anti-aging process. For example, using a cream with vitamin C will protect the surface of your skin from free radicals and harmful elements in the environment. Add to this regular exercise and a diet including plenty of anti-oxidants such as vitamin E, C and beta carotene and you’re helping to fight the tendency of oxygen to slowly break down muscle mass, and thus slow the type of tissue and muscle loss that occurs with as we grow older.

One final tip: always remember to protect your skin with sunblock. Wear hat and use high SPFs with frequent re-application, as minimal sun exposure is rule number one for healthy glowing skin.
