Probiotics and Prebiotics – GI Heath Factors
Guest Author - Sharon Lasitter

What are probiotics and prebiotics and why are they an essential part of our overall health and well being? Both probiotics and prebiotics serve a role in the basic functioning of the GI tract, and therefore that of the immune system. Since the immune system is located primarily just outside of the GI tract, keeping it healthy is not only the corner stone of your colon health but your over-all health as well.

Probiotics
Probiotics, meaning literally “for life” are a team of vital bacteria that support the healthy microbial balance in the intestinal tract. These good microbes or microflora, or “friendly flora” naturally reside in both the small and large intestines. When in healthy numbers, these bacteria literally communicate with the immune cells (white blood cells) that surround the intestinal tract. These immune cells which are a part of the lymph system, then send signals to white blood cells in other areas of the body guiding them to either amp up or relax their activity against allergens, viruses, toxins and invading bacteria (bad microbes,) such as E. coli and many others that cause infection in the body. They also help to curb intestinal disturbances such as, travelers and infant diarrhea, IBS, and the over-growth of candida bacteria. Probiotics also play a role in producing certain vitamins, removing toxins from environmental chemicals and metabolizing hormones. Probiotics in supplement form are readily available. *Note: If you have ever taken antibiotics in your lifetime, your friendly flora count has been compromised. Please see my article on the health dangers of antibiotics. The Hidden Dangers of Antibiotics

Prebiotics
Prebiotics are the non-digestible oligosaccharides found in dietary fiber. Fiber attained from fruits, vegetables and whole grains not only scrape away intestinal debris, but also supply prebiotics that work to feed friendly flora by fermenting in the intestines. These carbohydrates in their whole form are also beneficial in preventing inflammatory diseases, peptic ulcers and cancer and autoimmune diseases. They restore intestinal balance, relieve constipation and symptoms of IBS, increase mineral absorption and reduce the risk of obesity. Most Americans do not ingest enough prebiotics in their natural form but there are fiber supplements that are easily obtained and painlessly included in your diet.

Good health is something that goes beyond taking medications that mask an unhealthy gut. Taking your health into your own hands is simple, affordable and will save you many trips to the doctor. Here is to you and your good health!

*Please know that I am not a medical doctor or a health practitioner. I cannot diagnose your stomach problems nor can I guarantee a cure. I am here to share my knowledge, which applications have worked for me and to offer suggestions of where you may go physically, emotionally and spiritually for healing and self-empowerment. If you choose to explore alternative medicine, do not independently stop taking your prescribed medications. Always consult with your current doctor as well as your new practitioner when changing your medical program.
