Sandwich Remedy?

There are many benefits to sandwiches that we as a society have forgotten or you might just not think about as you build your ultimate hoagie or finger sandwich. Stimulating your appetite, awakening your digestive tract and enjoying a well-balanced meal keeps your metabolism moving. Watch out for those “road blocks” in your diet and in your sandwiches that could negate or counteract these healthful sandwich additions.

Many people enjoy a kaiser roll with a spicy mustard or aoli, genoa salami or hard salami and a leaf or two of fresh basil. Yes, basil!! Basil naturally stimulates your appetite and also aids in digestion by soothing the digestive tract. Sprinkle on some fresh, chopped chives (don’t cook them) they will also stimulate your appetite as well as adding a wonderful earthy, oniony flavor.

Do you enjoy celery and/or leaves of crunchy lettuce on your favorite sandwich? Celery is one of many natural, light diuretics found in vegetables and also helps remove toxins from the body and particularly helps promote healthy skin. Lettuce has a slight sedative effect - so don’t go too heavy on the lettuce at lunchtime! You might want to munch a few crunchy lettuce leaves before bedtime though.

Slices of cucumber help to dissolve toxins from the body and particularly, uric acid. Uric acid build-up in your system is one cause of kidney stones and other kidney disease. Eaten daily in moderation over a period of a few days, cucumber also has a positive effect on chronic constipation.

Try a twist on the peanut butter sandwich. Slices of raw, ripe apple have a mild laxative effect and try using ALMOND BUTTER rather than peanut. Many times, almond butter has less saturated fat content; is more easily digested and better tolerated by diabetics than its peanut cousin. There are also the “nut” allergies to consider!

Carrot slices as you probably already know contain the most advantageous Vitamin A and help with stress and discomforts of the eye. Even the sometimes odiferous onion has good effects! It has been found that people who routinely choose slices of raw onion on their sandwiches and foods tend to have a lower blood pressure. Mind you - onion combined with salty, dense foods cannot counteract or even “dissolve” the blood pressure RAISING effects of other foods.

As condiments and flavorings go - cayenne powder is an appetite stimulant and also has shown some positive blood pressure effects when used in moderation on sandwiches, soups and in foods over the course of several weeks. Olives and olive oil products have quite recently become recognized for their dissolution of some cholesterols as well as being grandma’s sometime solution for constipation!!! Olive oil also has enhancing and soothing qualities for the outside of the body as a natural emollient for the skin and hair.

Moderation is always the rule when seeking any natural support for digestion or for relief from any symptoms. Natural remedies have been used for years to suppress or relieve symptoms and while they are not meant to treat or cure any condition or disease, you may find it easier than you once thought to find some comfort right in your own cupboard!
