Crazy Stitch

Crazy Stitch made with 2 DC's
Crazy Stitch is an old traditional stitch, it can be found in many vintage crochet patterns however seems to have lost popularity over the years. It is an interesting, attractive stitch and one that is worth taking another look at today.

Crazy Stitch is one of the family of stitches where multiples of stitches are made into a single place to form a pattern or texture. With the Crazy Stitch a mix of single and double crochet stitches (US) (double and treble crochet UK) and chains which direct the stitches from side to side each row.

The stitch lends itself to variations and can be adapted by adding more stitches to each cluster to give more texture. As with all crochet different types of fabric can be made by varying the yarn and hook size. A thick yarn and smaller than normal hook will create a firm fabric whilst a thin yarn and larger than normal hook will create a lacy fabric.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CRAZY STITCH - given using US terms (for UK etc Crocheters change Single Crochet to Double Crochet and change Double Crochet to Treble Crochet).

A group is made from 1 Single Crochet, 2 Chain and 2 Double Crochet.

To start: Make a chain in multiples of 3 +1, ie to produce a piece of work with 5 clusters make a chain of 16 stitches.

First row: Make 2 Double Crochet into the fourth chain from the hook. * Miss 2 chain then into next stitch make 1 Single Crochet, 2 Chain and 2 Double Crochet * remembering to make all of these stitches into the same place. Repeat from * to * along the row.

Second and subsequent rows: Make one chain to turn and then into the two chain stitches in the first cluster in the previous row make * 1 Single Crochet, 2 Chain and 2 Double Crochet. * Repeat from * to * to the end of the row.

Made with 3 DC's slightly different to the sample above.
Variation: Try making 3 Double Crochet Stitches in each group rather than the 2 given in the instructions above. This will give a more compact finished feel to the work.

Substitute a Treble Crochet Stitch instead of one or all of the Double Crochet Stitches will give a more textured finish.

There are many different types of Crochet stitch - each one can be varied and adapted in different ways and lend themselves to particular uses. If you have a favorite stitch that you would like to share of have a request for more information about a particular stitch then why not pop into our forum and let me know!
