Recycling and Jewelry Collecting

Recycling and Jewelry Collecting
It has often been said “What is old will be new again”. With that quote, I think of spring. It has been a long and snowy winter here in Rhode Island, but we are finally seeing the glimmer of spring in the 60 degree sunny days of late. It seems as though it has been a long time coming. As I’m writing this, I hear the birds chirping outside and the ducks and geese swim lazily by on this overcast day. There are finally pockets of green as I scan across the pond, sure telltale signs that it won’t be long before the trees begin darning their cloaks of green and flowers begin to poke up searching for the elusive warmth of the sun.

Along with spring comes rebirth, awakening and of course spring cleaning! I do love this time of year a chance to get out of the house I’ve been cooped up in all winter. I take full advantage of local yard sales, tag sales, & flea markets to add to my ever growing jewelry collection. I like the whole idea of taking something that has outlived it’s usefulness to some and re-fabricating it into something wonderful. Don’t be afraid to take those pieces that are less than perfect and turn them into your showpiece! For years, I would be on the hunt for only the best pieces to add to my collection. I can’t tell you how many items I have passed up not giving due forethought to gathering those items that were less than perfect and using components to create something totally new. Learn from my mistakes!! This is a wonderful opportunity.

I have a jewelry friend that takes full advantage of this and offers it as a service to her clients. I have added this to my repertoire as well. Just recently, I was asked to take a favorite necklace from a dearly departed “Nana” and create 5 sets of earrings from it. These were now going to the grand-children and great-grand-children as cherished mementos. What a wonderful way to share among family members something of sentimental value! I do offer this service and feel free to contact me if I can be of service.

It is fact that we as occupants of this world need to find ways to keep and preserve what nature provides for future generations. We are only visitors here for a brief time. Recycling / repurposing jewelry is only a baby step, but it is a step in the right direction for all of us.
