Uncle Peter's Amazing Chinese Wedding
Guest Author - Taisha Turner

Uncle Peter’s Amazing Chinese Wedding by Lenore Look works on two levels. First, it gives insight in a little girl’s feelings regarding her favorite uncle’s upcoming wedding. She is sad because she believes her Uncle Peter’s affections will belong to her future Auntie Stella. The little girl, Jen, is upset that Uncle Peter will no longer consider her as his “special girl.”

Second, Uncle Peter’s Amazing Chinese Wedding gives the reader insight into Chinese wedding traditions. The reader along with Jen participates in the wedding customs. We see Auntie Stella making her entrance wearing a red dress with woven dragons and phoenixes. A red dress brings good luck. Many things are done to ensure good luck in the couple’s wedding. All the wedding traditions are sweetly explained.

At the story’s end, Jen learns she still has a place in Uncle Peter’s heart. She also gets a bonus, a place in Auntie Stella’s heart. Jen is reassured she is not loved less, but loved more by many people. Uncle Peter’s Amazing Chinese Wedding reaffirms a child’s place in a family.

If you are attending a Chinese wedding or desiring new information about a different culture, Uncle Peter’s Amazing Chinese Wedding by Lenore Look is the book. Get a copy and expand your world. Share the book and your love with a “special little one” in your life.

Yumi Heo illustrates Jen's story. The drawings are in oils, pencil and collage. Yumi Heo brings the Chinese wedding traditions to full color.
