The letter "A" has three sounds, two of which are well known; the short a sound found in apple and the long a sound found in ate. The less common and seldom taught sound is found in words like always. I am for teaching this sound as a standard sound. There are so many rules and exceptions to those rules that children encounter as they learn to read and study written language that I feel ignoring this sound or teaching it as an exception later on only leads to confusion.
Here I have two examples of words that begin with the one of the three different sounds that the letter “A” makes.
