Hire A Trainer or Be Your Own Trainer

Hire A Trainer or Be Your Own Trainer
I'm a firm believer that people should learn how to train their own horse instead of sending them to a trainer. The skills you learn in training your own horse will help you with other horses you purchase in the future.

Hiring A Trainer
If you decide to send your horse to a trainer it's highly unlikely you will get the same results they do plus they will be the one building a relationship with your horse not you. For you to achieve the same results you will have to be shown how to do the exact same thing they did and if they don't show you the results will not be the same.

Make sure you watch them training other people's horses first and ask lots of questions before sending your horse to them. If you see some things you don't like ask them about it, if the trainer gets defensive find someone else. A good trainer worth their salt will be more than happy to answer your questions.

I know some trainers that will not allow you to visit your horse for the first 30 days. If you find a trainer like this, I highly suggest you run as quickly as you can away from them. Trainers that do this have something to hide that they don't want you to see. Good trainers will allow you to watch the training sessions.

Trainers have to remain competitive which means they need to get results quickly. With quick results it means your horse will be rushed through the process with a lot of shortcuts taken.

Be Your Own Trainer
There are lots of benefits to training your own horse such as:

*You will save money
*It will build your confidence
*You will develop a strong relationship with your horse
*You will learn how to get clear with your communication and be more effective
*You will know that your horse hasn't been mistreated or handled roughly
*You will develop skills to last a lifetime

Instead of hiring a trainer for your horse hire a trainer that is willing to teach you how to train your own horse. When you go about training your own horse with the help of a professional you will get better results because of the bond that is created between you and your horse.

If you choose to train your own horse make sure you work with a professional as you don't want to be enforcing something that could turn into a bad behavior. Working with a professional will save you a lot of time and will lead to you being successful with your horse.
