Family Activities Help to Teach Preschoolers

It is never to early to start teaching household and business management to children.

If you have a toddler or a preschooler at home, you’re probably aware of how eager they are to learn. This is a great time to let them help you with your household chores or duties and teach them life's lessons as you do. It’s usually best to weave learning into daily activities such as playing, eating and household chores.

For instance, if your young child is eating dinner and does not want to eat his vegetables, you can make a game of it and have him count peas and pieces of corn on his plate. Ask him to "take away" 5 peas by eating them. Your little one may soon forget that he doesn't like peas. Kids think games like this are fun and they naturally absorb the information you expose them to over time.

If your child likes to draw on the sidewalk or a blackboard with chalk, the possibilities are endless. You can make up math games, word games, color and shape games, alphabet games. You can also make household chores, like doing the laundry, a preschool learning experience. Have him count shirts or socks while you fold. Add a sock, take away a sock, suddenly your child knows how to subtract. Or have him sort socks by color.

The key is to let little ones help with the chores and make an educational game of it. Jumpstart Pre-k Numbers Games, by Anne Schreiber is a lovely little book that will educate your child while he plays. He'll have fun with numbers and you will have fun and satisfaction just watching him become excited when he gets the right answer.
