Pope Benedict XVI Calls for Day of Prayer and Penance on July 23

With the situation getting worse in the Middle East, Pope Benedict XVI is calling for a day of prayer and penance on Sunday, July 23rd.

As a faithful people, we are asked to pray for peace:

Dear Lord,

Please instill in the hearts of those in the Middle East a peace that will allow them to cease-fire and find a more humane way to settle their differences. We lift all those who are suffering and afflicted up to you and trust that you will care for them and guide them. We pray for peace in the Middle East and peace in the world. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

As we are asked to pray by our current Pope, here is a prayer for peace from our late Pope.

Prayer for Peace by Pope John Paul II

Lord Jesus Christ, who are called the Prince of Peace, who are yourself our peace and reconciliation, who so often said, "Peace to you," grant us peace. Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice, and brotherly love. Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples on the earth become as brothers and sisters. May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all.
