I don't want to know anything about an artist before I listen to them whenever possible. I had the opportunity to do that with this CD entitled "Overtones and Innuendos" by Trizonna McClendon. I had no expectations. There were to be a host of surprises though, fourteen of them in fact, because track after track after track this young lady delivered!
I heard the influences, or at least I thought I did, almost from the beginning. The most powerful one was that of my most favorite female vocalist, Minnie Ripperton, but there are a number of artist currently who offer vague hints of Minnie. Trizonna doesn't imitate - she doesn't have to - she's strong and solid in her own right, but she has taken the best of Minnie's stylization and laced and intertwined it with her own. It's like that hint of Billie Holiday in Whitney's delivery I always felt I heard. Whitney was always Whitney, not Billie, just as Trizonna is bound to bounce into and onto the music scene as Trizonna not Minnie, but the compliment is there and it helps make her just that much more exciting as an artist! She exudes talent!
My favorites are "Sunshine and Lemonade", "Night of My Life", and "Remedy". You must add this uplifting, beautiful soundtrack to your collection.
