Buying Dolls

Buying Dolls
This past week I happened to be in a few department stores and, of course, I always go to the toy department and browse the doll aisles. To say the least, the selection on the shelves is disappointing. Not very much to choose from! I'm sure you have had the same experience. So, out of curiosity, I started to search online.

The choices are amazingly better online, than in any store. Surprisingly, to me at least, even the stores that have the least number of dolls to choose from in the store have a larger collection available online.

That is not to say that all retailers have a good selection, far from it. Some of the retailers that I expected to have a lot to choose from disappointed me; some of the ones I expected less from were surprisingly well stocked.

Of course, there is always the online auction giant, ebay. But there it is a mixed bag of new and used items. This can be great for the adult collector with so much to choose from. But, if you are looking for a new doll, for a child, you probably won't find as many to choose from.

Since I live in St. Louis, I started my search here. We have all the national chain retailers, as well as a few specialty toy stores; and they have an adequate selection for reasonably priced dolls, especially on their websites. There is one toy store that carries Gotz dolls in store and a few that have them online. Some that also have Corolle available online as well.

The store that had the best selection of dolls, for both the adult collector and children, was the Sears website. I was completely shocked and pleased to find this. They have an amazing collection of brands available, including but not limited to: Gotz, Madame Alexander, Corolle, Berenguer, Carpatina, Duck House and many more.

I am pleased to see a retailer with so many dolls to choose from, but I am saddened by the lack of choice in all the brick and mortar stores, walking the aisles in a toy store and trying to pick the perfect doll is some of my favorite memories from childhood.
