Colorado Honeymoon – Winter in Aspen

Colorado Honeymoon – Winter in Aspen
Long a retreat for celebrities, Aspen combines small-town charm with big-city sophistication. Nestled in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Aspen is an ideal winter destination for honeymooners, especially those who love to ski or snowboard. What could be more romantic than spending a day with your sweetheart schussing the slopes, sharing a mug of hot chocolate in front of a crackling fire and then snuggling under a down comforter in your luxurious hotel room?

Where to stay
Aspen accommodations range from resort hotels and condominium rentals to intimate ski lodges and private homes in all budget categories. For the ultimate honeymoon indulgence, consider a stay at the historic Hotel Jerome. Located in the heart of downtown, the Victorian hotel dates back to 1889, but features all of the modern amenities you’d expect from an upscale property, such as in-room DVD players, high-speed internet access and oversized bathtubs.

Another high-end property to consider is the St. Regis, where you’ll find Aspen’s best spa. The 15,000-square-foot Remede Spa features a 24-hour fitness center, an oxygen lounge, and a co-ed confluence room, where you and your new husband can relax together in a warm pool with cascading waterfalls. Spa treatments include from customized facials, apres-ski massages and body wraps.

For the ideal ski-in/ski-out location on the slopes of Aspen Mountain, check out The Little Nell. A slope-side ski concierge can take care of your every need as you prepare for a day of skiing, such as warming your boots, fueling you with morning snacks and coffee and arranging lessons.

Where to eat
From sushi to burritos, from Italian to Mediterranean, there is a wide range of excellent dining options in Aspen, in all price categories. You could easily spend a week in Aspen and not make your way through all the fabulous restaurants. Most high-end restaurants take reservations in the peak winter season. Here are just a few favorites:

- Cache Cache: Longtime locals' favorite for modern French food, hip vibe and affordable bar menu.

- Jimmy’s An American Restaurant and Bar: Steaks, chops and seafood dishes. Don’t miss salsa night!

- The Cantina: Casual Mexican food with lots of seafood specialties.

- Gusto: Upscale Italian with a wood-burning oven for tasty pizzas.

- Poppycock’s: Yummy breakfast spot with vast menu. A highlight: the macadamia-nut pancakes!

What to do
With four ski mountains to choose from – Aspen, Buttermilk, Snowmass and Aspen Highlands – there is no shortage of ski trails. With one lift ticket, you can ski at all four mountains. Save money by purchasing multi-day lift tickets.

Beyond the slopes, there are plenty of fun, romantic activities to enjoy:

- Take a dog-sled ride through the pristine mountain wilderness and then eat lunch or dinner at the Krabloonik Kennels and Restaurant; menu highlights include the famous Wild Mushroom Soup and wild-game entrees.

- Snowshoe, cross-country ski or take a horse-drawn sleigh to the Pine Creek Cookhouse outside of the historic ghost town of Ashcroft. The Cookhouse menu features hearty soups, breads, salads and gourmet entrees.

- Spin with your sweetie under the twinkling white lights of downtown’s Silver Circle Ice Rink.

- Browse the Aspen Art Museum’s rotating exhibits or check out the historic Wheeler Stallard Museum, home of the Aspen Historical Society.

- Stroll downtown, which is lined with enough art galleries, coffee shops, boutiques and funky secondhand stores to keep you occupied all afternoon.

- See who’s performing at Belly Up, the hippest club for live music.

- Take a zip-line ride at Snowmass Mountain

- Strap on some snowshoes and hike up any of the ski mountains (stay to the side of the trail) or take a guided nature walk on Aspen Mountain.

- Snuggle on a comfy couch in front of your hotel lobby's fireplace and revel in your cozy, winter honeymoon in Aspen!
