Civil Right Newsletter
Guest Author - Sylvia Cochran

Thank you for subscribing to the Civil Rights Newsletter published by BellaOnline´s Civil Rights area (the well-known corner of the web where EVERYONE can discuss civil rights civilly, where EVERYONE can find resources and links to articles and sites that deal with cutting edge civil rights issues in many areas of daily living, and where EVERYONE is a member of a family where (wo)men can discuss hot topics of the day without having to worry that it is “off limits” in polite company)!

What‘s New?

Once again we firmly have our finger posted on the national pulse – but perhaps we would have preferred a muzzle?!? In Curtailing Civil Rights for the Global Good? we contemplate the words of Andy Rooney who suggests that we “figure(d) out how to behave as a nation in a way that wouldn't make so many people in the world want to kill us.” Is this really the way to look at the issue? Perhaps rather than curtailing the hard-won civil rights and liberties of Americans, it would be more productive to curtail the murderous appetites of those who find mass-homicide and terrorism to be an acceptable solution for whatever it is that ails them.

Civil Rights Trivia Game

Last time we asked the question: Can you name the United States Presidents on whose lives assassination attempts were made that failed?
The Answer: Presidents Jackson, T. Roosevelt, F. Roosevelt, Truman, Ford, and Reagan.
Unfortunately we do not have a winner this time. But do not give up! Who knows, you might be the winner this time!

Rules:
If you know the answer, please e-mail me. All who answer correctly will see their names published in the next newsletter. (Sorry, no other tangible prizes yet!)

Here goes: Can you name the only United States President who never married?

Civil Rights News You Can Use

Loitering used to be forbidden under the law. Homeless men and women were encouraged to visit shelters, or – if inebriated – were jailed overnight to sober up. Now, thanks to a deal between the ACLU and the city of Los Angeles, these poorest of the poor will be required to remain on the streets, away from safety and subjected to the endless drug trade that is taking place on skid row. Business owners who operate an establishment between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am are forewarned that they should not call the police to report loitering vagrants. An undisclosed sum of money also changed hands. Read and be amazed ... Deal Reached in LA Homeless Camping Case .

Musing Of The Month

" Who knows what true loneliness is -- not the conventional word, but the naked terror? To the lonely themselves it wears a mask. The most miserable outcast hugs some memory or some illusion. Now and then a fatal conjunction of events may lift the veil for an instant. For an instant only. No human being could bear a steady view of moral solitude without going mad." (Joseph Conrad 1857-1924)
