SJP Bitten by the Celebrity Fashion Bug
Best known for her role in Golden Globe award winning series Sexy And The City, it was only really a matter of time before Sarah Jessica Parker released her signature clothing line. Carrie Bradshaw’s extensive designer wardrobe never ceased to amaze and off camera SJP has become known for her timeless, sophisticated style that is defined by her skill at wearing clothes well, never overdoing things or becoming a slave to a trend and dressing up classic pieces with understated, glamorous accessories.

She released her signature scent, Lovely, in 2005, described by the perfume website as “feminine, timeless and ageless,” which rings true of the long-standing SJP brand and up-coming clothing range. This could also be what separates this line from other celebrity capsule collections – understated glamour is SJP’s signature look, offering classic basics from striped tees to simple red flip flops – a stark contrast to other celebrity fashion debuts that feature everything from bright blue prom dresses (Lily Allen) to bottom skimming denim hot pants (Kate Moss); all hot trends but hardly for the average lady’s wardrobe.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s collection, Bitten, offers a selection of classic pieces that make for excellent wardrobe staples with a subtle touch of celebrity glamour. The range is wearable, stylish and unusually affordable with most items costing less than $20 USD. It encompasses fantastic work-wear with a selection of shirt-dresses and tailored jackets, comfortable casual-wear (very Gap-esque) including zip up hoodies and chinos as well as understated evening- wear, including strapless dresses and some glitzy accessories.

Cheap, wide-ranging and clothes anyone could wear – is this too good to be true? Many might think SJP’s efforts have been wasted on such a basic, casual range – what about the Patricia Field inspired, Manolo-wearing, ultra-fashionable SJP that walked around Manhattan in kitten heels and a vintage frock? This is where the confusion starts – we were all expecting a Carrie Bradshaw diffusion range teeming with fearless fashion pieces, sky-high stilettos and absolutely-to-die-for handbags and shoes. Many critics and die-hard SATC fans may think this is an unexpectedly boring clothing line compared with others that capitalise on their fame and glamour introducing real statement pieces and injecting current trends with real celebrity style we all want to emulate.

Bitten is, however, a very down-to-earth, practical and wearable collection, which we truly should thanks SJP for. This is a line we ALL could wear, whether we’re of the voluptuous build or perfectly svelte, whether we’re a twenty-something or 50 years old – this range has a timeless basic for everyone.

Our favourites for the beach include the funky Bleach White Shorts and True Red Flip Flops, perfect when teamed with a basic striped tee or vest and fitted denim jacket. For the office you can’t go wrong with the Classic Black Cuff Sleeve Shirt Dress and oversize Vintage Brown Cargo Bag or if you need a new and fashionable day look for the summer, choose the Puff Sleeve Ruffle Top in light blue and the Ankle Zip Cropped skinny jeans, gorgeous when teamed with Bleached White Wedge Heel Peep Toe and a steal at only $9.98.

The main downside to Bitten is that you can only find it in Steve & Barrys across the US (New Yorkers, keep a space in your diary for 7th June, 12pm for a signing session with SJP at the Manhattan Mall Steve & Barrys store). Our friends across the water in the UK or Europe, keep your eyes peeled for similar timeless pieces (think fitted cotton shirts and denim Capri pants for a simple but stylish summer).
