Using Your Computer Skills As A Volunteer
USE YOUR COMPUTER SKILLS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

If you are reading this page, you have what it takes to make a difference in someones life. Using your computer skills as a volunteer can open up a whole new world of career opportunities. Becoming a dedicated volunteer can often give you exposure to the leaders in your community (who often are also those who might be in a position to hire you). If you take your volunteer commitment seriously and make a good impression, you may be on your way to a better job. There are lots of ways you can put your skills to good use. Often, basic skills are all you need to make a difference.

For example, do you use your computer to do your own taxes? If so, you can qualify to help low-income people do their taxes through the IRS Volunteers in Tax Assistance program. Last year, I helped with the VITA program in Fairfax County which helped families with incomes of less than $39,000 per year get several thousand dollars back from the IRS through the Earned Income Tax Credit and other refunds. The volunteers also work with participants to craft financial plans so put the money to good use. A few thousand dollars can start someone off on a new career path or put a down payment down a house. Volunteers that are very good at figuring out new programs can put their skills to work as the tax software wizards. Impressing fellow volunteers (many of whom work for large businesses) may lead to future job opportunities)

Would you like to share your love of technology with children? There are many afterschool programs that help kids who cant afford to have a computer in their homes catch up with their peers. The Computer Learning Centers Partnership in Fairfax provides after school computer and literacy instruction. Business leaders from throughout the county donate time, money and other resources to help these kids succeed. The kids who participate in CLCP usually end up improving their academic performance by one whole letter grade because of the extra attention by adult role models. Many prominent area businesses participate in the Advisory Council which acts as a steering committee for the program.

These are just a few examples of the types of things you can do with your computer skills. Dont delay. Call your local volunteer center and find out how you can help.
