Why Create A Language?

You have a wonderful idea for a story. The plot is awesome, the characters are fantastic, but you still feel that something is missing, that you need just a little something else to make it perfect. Maybe you need to create a language for your world. Why would you ever want to go to the time and trouble to do that?

Language is powerful and involved in just about everything we do as a people. It is how we communicate with each other, how we share our emotions, how we write stories, how we understand each other. Without a language, we would be hard pressed to do any of the above, plus a lot more things.

Language shapes the thoughts of a culture and are able to make conflict. A language can bring people together, or it can divide them. The media helps to mold how people think. Books have been banned because of the ideas that are put forth in them. And there are those who don’t believe there should be any restrictions put on what is written for everyone to read.

If you decide to create a language you don’t have to write entire dictionaries, you just need to come up with a basic alphabet and some words that all follow the same rules. Your language does not have to be as complex as the English language. We have so many ways to say just one thing. In a lot of languages there is only one way to express a certain thought, so it is much simpler if you create your language this way.

Musicians have their own special language with words and phrases not familiar to those who aren’t involved with music. So do writers, artists, doctors, and mechanics. Think of just about any profession or hobby and it will have a special vocabulary of its own.

Creating a new language doesn't have to be complicated or scary. "Create A Language Clinic" is a step-by-step course in fictional language creation. Holly Lisle thoroughly explains how to create a unique language for the characters in your book. The course is complete with examples and worksheets. It shows just how much fun creating a fictional language can be and how much it can add to your book or story.
