Satellite Radio VS Commercial Radio

Guest Author - Kathy Lyngholm

As I was driving down the road today listening the XM radio that I “borrowed” from my husbands truck I realized something, I was singing along to a song that I hadn’t heard on the radio in years. Mind you, I live in Texas right outside Houston so there are no shortage of commercial radio stations to listen to, but the selections that they play seem to be limited to those artists that are on the charts at the moment. I don’t know about you but I get really tired of hearing the same songs over and over again with a bunch of commercials thrown in or having to make mix CDs with the songs that are my favorites. Enter satellite radio (XM or Sirius) and boy does the horizon change for the listener.

I was against having to pay for radio stations when I first heard about the new service that came out a few years ago, I didn’t see the sense in it at all. Then my husband talked about having one of the guys working with him putting his XM Radio into the truck on one of their trips out of town and how much he enjoyed the variety he could get from the stations. We went and purchased a system for his truck and I actually got to experience the wave of the future.

While I can’t tell you anything about the Sirius radio channels, I can tell you that the XM radio offers a selection of country stations that range from the top 40 to songs from the 80’s and 90’s to Willie’s Place to Bluegrass. I have enjoyed listening to Roger Miller, The Statler Brothers and even up and coming artists that haven’t hit the big time yet. You can pick up a receiving unit for as little as 25.00 and the monthly charge is around 10.00 a month and you can add a second unit for as little at 7.00 a month more. For those of you that don’t have credit cards, XM offers a prepaid card that you can purchase to get your unit working.

Installation is no problem either, the kit comes with a power plug that goes in your cigarette lighter and a clip on holder for your dash. No major pulling the dash apart problems like you might run into with a brand new radio.

Stop by the forum and let us know if you have a satellite radio and whether you think it is worth the money or not.
