How many times have you watched a movie and thought. "I want to go there," only to be disappointed that no such "there" truly existed. For those of us who watched the movie, Nim's Island (Widescreen Edition)
Except... wait! It actually does, and you can go there.
Hinchinbrook Island is the location where much of Nim's Island was filmed, and the Hichinbrook Island Wilderness Lodge & Resort offers a taste of the style of accommodations Nim and her father lived in while on their private island.
Located in Northern Queensland in Austrlaia's largest National Park, and surrounded by the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef, Hinchinbrook Island is a true hideaway paradise, the kind rarely found in this day and age. Rugged crags and peaks covered in lush rainforest, and beautiful stretches of soft sand beaches (eleven of them, to be precise), Hinchinbrook is a true tropical oasis. It is an intimate, secluded place with all the comforts you need at the Wilderness Lodge and Resort, and the perfect setting for an amazing vacation getaway.
The main lodge keeps the feel and flavor of the remote island getaway with an open layout in islander style, taking advantage of the surrounding rainforest and gardens. It is the focal point of all activities, and includes the reception, restaurant, lounge, and bar. A large pool is located in the gardens.
The Treetop Bungalows are the most popular accommodations, and here you can truly feel as if you are the adventurer looking out over your tropical paradise. All of the Treetop Bungalows are nestled in the rainforest and are connected by a winding, timber boardwalk. They offer amazing views of the ocean, rainforest or both through floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as a patio and lounge room, in addition to the bedroom and bathroom. Each are equipped with a fridge and coffee/tea making facilities and have daily maid service.
For those who never want to be far from the ocean, Hinchinbrook Wilderness Lodge & Resort offers 8 Beach Cabins, separately located and behind the beach with direct access. They are an older style of cabin but have been recently rennovated, and include mini fridge, electric jug, toaster, and sink.
A variety of activities are available for you to enjoy as you wish, including guided hikes and walks, day cruises, fishing charters, and more. Kayaks, canoes, snorkels & masks, beach hammocks, and fishing equipment are all provided for your use. The resort also has laundy facilities, a library, and gift shop. For those who wish to explore on their own, picnic lunches are provided at the restaurant.
The island boasts abundant bird life, such as Herons, Cockatoos, Pheasants, Scrub Hens, Sunbirds, and Torres Strait and Wompoo Pigeons. Cape Richards on the northern end of the island is the best vantage point for sunsets, dolphins, and looking at the neighboring islands. Turtle Bay on the southern end is home to many large sea turtles, which are often visible in the afternoon eating marine grasses.
Though the island might not be yours alone, as it was for Nim and her father, it is secluded enough to feel as if it is. For those looking for a vacation truly surrounded in nature, where sea turtles, dolphins, rainforest, and more was but a short walk away from your luxurious treetop accommodation, then look no further than Hichinbrook Island.
