Taos Pueblo | Taos New Mexico Travel
Guest Author - Debra Conrad

Taos Indian tradidions are captured within the Taos Pueblo walls. After 400 years the Taos Pueblo is not only preserved, but alive with residents and artists. A special heritage is held within its mud and straw adobe walls, with a way of life little changed by the passage of time.

Taos-Pueblo-New-Mexico historical area lies just under the majestic peaks of the Taos Mountains. Located 70 miles north of Sante Fe, it is a beautiful drive. If you are in Taos, the Taos Pueblo is only two miles north.
For nearly 1,000 years, the Taos Indians have lived in or near the Pueblo site. The Taos Pueblo is the largest existing muli-storied Pueblo structure in the United States. It has been continuously inhabited for centuries.
The Rio Pueblo de Taos, which originates in the mountains at Blue Lake, serves as the primary water source for drinking and irrigation.
<a href=Taos-Pueblo-New-Mexico-Travel-HornoBread is still baked in outdoor domed ovens called "hornos", just as their ancestores did. You will get a fascinating glimpse into the past as you observe the tribe in surroundings that have remained mostly unchanged for years.

Nearby, is the ruins of the original San Geronimo Mission, where 150 people were killed by the U.S. Army in 1847.

Frequent ceremonies, pow wows, and feast days are sometimes open to the public, however generally photography and sketching is prohibited.

The artisians of Taos Pueblo make some beautiful handcrafted jewelery and pottery. You will also find tanned buckskin moccasins and drums. The silver and turquoise jewelry ranges from touristy items to very fine art. Taos Pueblo pottery is mostly the mica-flecked black pottery so desirable today.

The Pueblo closes for six weeks in the spring, as well as for religious days and funerals, etc., so you should call ahead to check on the timing of your visit. Tours are available and a really good way to get all the stories and history first hand... well worth the extra charge.(505) 758-1028
