Climbing Roses for shade.

English Gardens are well known for their abundance use of roses and sunny borders. There are no roses that grow in daylong deep shade.

However if you have a garden with very little sun - don’t despair there for here is a collection of roses that will tolerate a shady position.

Climbers for North Walls or shaded spots.


Albéric Barbier is a lovely cottage garden rambler rose that has white flowers that open from cream buds. Has almost evergreen foliage 20ft - flowers once.

Alchymist - has large blooms of yellow and almost yolk-orange with a strong scent. 4.0x2.5m. Summer flowering.

Alister Stella Gray -has flowers of a rich yellow, pales to creamy white with age. Beautiful scent. 4.5x3.0m. Repeat flowering


Cecile Brunner Climbing - has large sprays of small, fragrant shell to rose-pink. Vigorous-ideal for growing into trees. 8.0x6.0m - 25x20ft. Repeat flowering.

Claire Jacquier has large clusters of rich fragrant yellow blooms fading to cream of pleasing perfume. 4.5x2.5m. Repeat flowering.

Danse du Feu - has large trusses of brick-red, double flowers fading to red-magenta. Flowers throughout summer. 3.5x2.5m. Repeat flowering.


Dortmund - has clusters of large, crimson flowers with a pale eye. Vigorous, thorny plant with dark green foliage. 2.5x1.8m. Repeat flowering.

Galway Bay - has fragrant blooms of salmon-pink. Dark green, glossy foliage. 3.5x2.5m. Flowers throughout the summer.

Golden Showers – has summer long fragrant blooms of golden-yellow fading to cream. Almost thornless stems of upright habit. Excellent for small gardens. 3.0x2.0m.


Iceberg Climbing - has beautiful flowers of pure white, semi-double blooms. Almost thornless stems.5.5x3.0m. Summer flowering.

Kiftsgate - masses of creamy white flowers, grows very large - ideal for scrambling through big trees.

Madame Alfred Carriere - A lovely 'old rose' bearing clusters of double, white flushed pink, fragrant flowers; 4.0x3.0m 12ftx10ft. Continuous flowering.


Madame Gregoire Staechlin is a climbing hybrid tea with fragrant, double, pale-pink blooms. Has hips in autumn if not dead-headed. Vigorous grower 4.5x3.0m. Repeat flowering.

Madame Plantier an ideal cottage garden rose with clusters of white scented blooms. Only grows to 6ft

Maigold - has fragrant, bronze-yellow flowers in early summer and will often repeat later in the year. 3.0x3.0m.


Mermaid –has lovely bright yellow blooms throughout July and September – a vigorous grower

Mrs. Herbert Stevens Climbing – a climbing Hybrid Tea with large pure white scented blooms. 4.0mx2.5m. Repeat flowering.

New Dawn – has lovely fragrant pale pink flowers and mid green leaves. Flowers June and July. Not too vigorous ideal for trellis and arbours.


Noisette Carnée - has scented, semi-double, lilac-pink blooms. Shortish climber or can be a large shrub 2.1m x 1.25m.

Shot Silk Climbing - a climbing fragrant hybrid tea with large blooms of cerise-pink with a touch of salmony-yellow. Good disease resistance. 6.0x2.0m. Repeat flowering.

Have a good browse through your local garden shop - many shops will order you plants if they do not stock them.
