Book Review: Beading on Fabric

Beading on Fabric

Beading on Fabric by Larkin Jean Van Horn

ISBN:1-59668-004-0
2006 Interweave Press

Fiber artist Larkin Van Horn has a love for the form and function of beads, and that love shines in this book.

The book opens with an overview of the tools you will need, including fabric, thread, needles, glues and stabilisers. This section is well set out, and goes into quite a bit of detail – just what beginners to this form of embroidery need.

Next, a comprehensive look at the different types of beads used in embroidery, including tips for caring for beaded fabrics.

The largest section of the book is devoted to teaching stitches and incorporating beads into stitches, from basic stitches to more advanced techniques such as edging and fringes.

Throughout the book, your eyes are given a visual treat with photographs of the author’s creations; inspiring your own creativity. Diagrams are in colour and provide clear and easy to see practical illustrations of the textual instructions.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and learned a lot myself about some of the different techniques to making beaded fringes, and about beading around cabochon stones.

The entire book is written in a very friendly tone, encouraging you to pick up needle, thread and beads and just give it all a go! The techniques in this book are also useful for attaching charms to your work as well.

So why not take the plunge, and learn how beads can add something “special” to your embroidery.
