JAWS Certification Program

Guest Author - Dean Ingalls

JAWS is a very popular screen reader program used by blind and visually impaired individuals for operating a computer.

The letters in the word JAWS stands for “Job Access With Speech.” The program was designed to help the blind use the computer to get access to the features of a computer, e-mail messaging and the Internet. Access to the technology opened new doors and different methods for the visually impaired/blind to search for work and obtain help and support for continuing his/her education or a college degree program.

If you are a JAWS user becoming JAWS certified can help improve your use of JAWS and looks very impressive on a resume.

Find out how much you know about JAWS by going to the Freedom Scientific website (www.freedomscientific.com) and take the certification exam.

The exam covers a variety of topics about the JAWS product. The test covers items such as installation procedures, using the training materials, knowing how to find help and contacting technical support.

You need to know information about the following areas of the JAWS program to have an opportunity to score a passing grade on the test.

Categories on the JAWS Certification Exam:

1. JAWS features

2. JAWS headquarters

3. JAWS installation

4. JAWS Training

5. Keyboard knowledge

6. HTML

7. Learning JAWS

If you are like me, the first item on my mind is will I have to pay a fee for taking the certification exam. The answer to the cost question is no. You can take the exam for free and up to five times. The only cost is if you desire to obtain an official certificate from Freedom Scientific. The cost of the document is ninety-nine dollars and a thirty-nine dollar annual renewal if you wish to update your certification status.

The suggested study for preparing for the exam is ten hours. The study time gives you the opportunity to listen to all of the study material for the exam.

You can find step-by-step instructions for how to study for the exam, what to study, where and how to find the material, how to sign up for the exam, specific items about the length of the test and how to submit the exam.

You will find out the results of your exam immediately after the sixty-minute time limit is expired. You are given a link with instructions on how to find and understand your test results.

Editor’s Note:
I am in the process of studying for the exam. If you decide to take the exam – good luck and visit the Vision Issues forum and tell us about your testing experience.
