Every day in the news there is one group or another lauded for their work helping the less fortunate. It seems that groups pop up daily to address a need and yet they always seem to be of a Christian bent. This can't be accurate. Why aren't there any other denominations offering help? There are.
There are many reasons that the minority faith groups are not being showcased. One reason is that The wiccan community has no agenda. We are not interested in bringing anyone to our religion.
Another reason is that there is no sensationalism in doing good work for your community. In order to be newsworthy, a wiccan or pagan group would have to be doing something that can play along with the public's view of how bizarre we seem to them.
Finally, there often is not a central group of wiccan faith organizations that are making changes in the community. Often it is just a general group that wants to do good work and there is not need to tout what faith you are because it is about the deeds and not the individual people.
If you are interested in either creating or joining a volunteer effort that is based on your wiccan faith, I suggest contacting others who have done the same. There are many groups already helping with food, clothing and financial emergencies across the country. They will be able to give you a guideline for starting your own group that will do the most good in your area.
Always try to remember that it is the action and not the person that makes a group successful. No matter what you decide to do in your local area, bring your wiccan faith in your actions and have it take a back seat to the work you are trying to achieve.
In researching this article, I found a huge website where someone has lovingly gathered many pagan and wiccan groups in many topic areas who help others through volunteering efforts. I was originally going to find my own resources but this site deserves to be showcased. Please visit them and let them know that We, the wiccans at the BellaOnline community appreciate their hard work.
