Give your Home a New Look with Southwestern Flair
Your home can be as unique as you'd like it to be. So why not give your home a new look by incorporating the bold designs of the Southwest? This design style is not only contemporary, but budget-friendly as the Southwestern look lends itself to being simple.
The Southwestern look is all about the colors of nature combined with bold clean lines of rustic wrought iron and brightly decorated Hispanic or Native American art. With a few accent pieces, you can be well on your way to creating this look in any room of your home.
The Southwestern look is made up of:
- Rugged natural materials made of wood or stone
- Brightly colored patterned fabrics
- Interesting artwork with Native themes
- Overscale furniture with simple lines
- Desert and organic colors
- Lots of natural light
Once you have identified a room that you would like to transform in your home, start by painting the walls in a muted desert tone. The best colors are warm desert tones of terra cotta, browns and tans.
Then add your oversize furniture items made of heavy wood frames covered in dark colors. You may also want to add a few wrought iron tables with glass or stone tops. Highlight the furniture with pillows or throws in the same natural desert colors as the wall.
Add some interesting Native American artwork, a woven wall hanging, a couple of Southwestern iron work pieces and lots of natural light to draw the eye upward.
Keep window treatments in simple earth tone colors. In Hacienda or Spanish style homes you might find heavy draperies. But... in the desert southwest design has turned to blinds instead of fabric and even no window coverings at all.
Then accent tables with smaller pieces of art made of rustic wood, metal and brightly painted pottery. Lot's of mesquite and pine accessories are used in contemporary Southwest decorating. Plus... the fun of hunting for the perfect pot or rug is just the best kind of "southwest girl shopping"!
Now step back and enjoy your Southwestern inspired home!
