Wedding planning has suddenly become easier. I recently interviewed Stacey Roney, creator of Beauty on Call, a firm that brings beauty and spa services directly to the bride and wedding party. Our interview follows:
The name Beauty on Call brings to my mind the luxury of a personal hair dresser or make up artist instantly at my service. What does your typical client receive?
Roney: Seventy five percent of our clients are brides who are seeking on location hair and makeup services.
We provide artists and stylists in Chicago, NYC, LA, Orange County, Dallas, Miami, West Palm Beach/Boca Raton, Scottsdale/Phoenix and Minneapolis/St. Paul. The other twenty five percent of our clients are people who want spa services on location including manicures, pedicures, massage, brow shaping, facials and paraffin wax treatments.
Who is your typical client? Who is it that could benefit from your services?
Roney: Our client is anyone who wants the convenience of services on location without sacrificing quality and service. Our clients include brides, corporate groups, hotels and individuals who want to plan an at home spa party.
Beauty on Call is such an original idea. How did you come up with the thought for the program?
Roney: I was previously a cosmetic buyer for Nordstrom. I was responsible for planning all of the events that we produced and all of the cosmetic companies continuously asked
me to help them staff the events. There was always a need for additional makeup artists, hair stylists and estheticians but there was no staffing agency that specialized in this area so I started the company. Initially, the plan was to staff the retailers and cosmetic companies but it quickly turned to staffing weddings and other special events.
How long have you been in business?
Roney: Six years.
What size staff did you begin business with and can you describe your company now?
Roney: I started with just myself and a few freelance makeup artists. I handled every aspect of the business including the recruiting and interviewing, the marketing, the accounting, the sales and the relationship building. We have grown to over 400 freelancers nationwide and have built a team in the office to handle all aspects of the business. We have a staffing director, an accountant, a publicist, a VP of sales and a national recruiter.
To have grown from a staff of four to over four hundred in six short years is amazing. It shows that Beauty on Call found a void in the industry and filled it with exactly what is wanted by the public today.
