Hurley's Blog

Since its inception in 2004 the television series LOST has held my attention captive, along with millions of other fans. What makes the show is the characters, their interesting backgrounds, their endless dilemmas and of course the island itself.

When LOST started I was instantly charmed by the large dude with the curly hair named Hugo Reyes but affectionately called Hurley. I wondered numerous times how they were going to answer the weight issue. Because, as we know, weight is always an issue.

Hurley's weight has been brought up numerous times. Firstly, because food was a point of contention with other passengers; and secondly, because of the bullying that Hurley endured from other passengers trying to deal with their own baggage. Overall, I've been happy with the way they've dealt with these issues even though in some instances it might have taken longer than others. But I believe that has to do more with the evolution of the characters.

Hurley's character has shown the world that plus size men can be loving, loyal, courageous, active, productive and vital parts of the community. Not only the funny guy in the crowd. And we love him for it. Hurley has given fat guys the world over a role model to look up too (aside from the occasional schizophrenic periods but I'm going to blame that as an island side effect).

The character of Hurley is portrayed by actor Jorge Garcia. Despite Garcia having about twenty other gigs before landing the role of the millionaire lottery winner on LOST, I honestly haven't heard of him before. Part of my growing adoration for him has to do with his interaction with fans. Since August 2007 he's been regularly updating a blog (over 200 posts).

His blog is called Dispatches from the Island. It is a mixture of personal anecdotes and life on the set full of entertaining commentary and pictures. Not surprisingly he has a lot of fans following and making comments along the way. If you haven't been there before I highly recommend you make the trip. No luggage required.

Visit Jorge Garcia's Blog (a.k.a. Hurley's Blog).
