Honeymoon Options “South of the Border”

If you’re contemplating a honeymoon in Mexico, there are many options to choose from, from boutique hotels in colonial towns, posh resorts along sun-kissed shores or glitzy hotels in Mexico City. Here are just a few to suggestions to get you into the romantic, “South of the Border” mode:

La Puertecita Boutique Hotel

Snuggled into the hillside of one of Mexico’s most historic towns, La Puertecita Boutique Hotel glistens like a colonial jewel in San Miguel de Allende. Rooms feature Mexican bóvedas (domed brick ceilings)indigenous décor, cozy fireplaces, interior gardens and inviting patios.

La Puertecita Restaurant dishes up award-winning regional specialties; La Palapa is a tree house perched above the forest with a view of a 300-year-old aqueduct.

Maroma Resort and Spa

Maroma Resort and Spa, on secluded Maroma Beach is just 30 minutes south of bustling Cancun. Designed with whimsical Maya/Moorish touches, the 25-acre retreat houses 65 rooms either along the beach or hidden in secluded gardens. In fact, deciding between a room with unobstructed views of the crystalline Caribbean or opting for one with a preferred peek into dense tropical foliage is the only decision you’ll have to make once there.

Rooms flicker with bamboo-filtered light and sunken tubs promise soothing comfort after a day of exploring nearby Maya ruins or windsurfing or frolicking with the dolphins. Slip into the spa before sharing a candlelight gourmet dinner serenaded by a crooning trio and your day is complete.

Tides Riviera Maya Resort

Carved from the primitive jungle close to the small village of Xcalacoco in Playa del Carmen, near Cancun, sequestered sea-side luxury Tides Riviera Maya Resort promises luxury at its best along Riviera Maya. Say "si, si" to magical moments in one of 30 thatched luxury bungalows, each with private pool and hammock.

Vibrant tropical greens mesh with the mesmerizing blue of the surrounding sea to set the stage for the perfect honeymoon. Every "casita" boasts a mystical jungle view and is linked by a series of walkways leading you through the lush terrain and spilling eventually out onto the beach.

Four Seasons, Punta Mita

Swaddle yourself in the lap of luxury, tucked into Four Seasons’ Punta Mita Resort on a private isthmus hugging the shores of the Bahia de Banderas, 26 miles from Puerto Vallarta.

They say there’s nothing like a "view from the top," so select a cliff-side perch, where and your beloved can scan the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains. For a more "hands-on" beach experience, select an Oceanside Suite with the emerald Pacific practically nibbling at your toes.

During the day landlubbers can tee up for a seaside round of golf on a lush Jack Nicklaus course, sign up for a "love match" on well-groomed tennis courts, or indulge in a Punta Mita (Spanish for "resting place") Massage, a delicious blend of sage oil mixed with Tequila and ancient Mexican rituals.

For the ultimate experience, the Apuane Suite offers a private sauna, steam room, hot tub and outdoor sun patio – just for two.

Ventanas al Paraíso

Rendezvous with romance and embark on a sensual interlude you’ll never forget at Las Ventanas al Paraíso ("windows to paradise"). With a name like that, can you doubt what awaits you? Wedged between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortes at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, it’s been dubbed “the sexiest resort in the world,” by many who have stayed there.

Breath-taking views sweeping throughout promise glimpses of the magnificent sea, serene desert or distant coastline. Mediterranean-Mexican décor dots a serpentine network of swimming pools, seaside hammocks and patios.

When night falls, have a tête-à-tête amid the 2,500 vintage wines in La Cava, then retire to your private terrace to stargaze with your own telescope, provided by the resort.

Discover a new twist to wine tasting with Tequila lessons at the Tequila & Ceviche Bar, while celebrating the bounty of the sea with an array of succulent ceviche choices complemented by nearly 100 of Mexico’s most exclusive, aged Tequilas.

Marquis Reforma, Mexico City

Rising like a pretty pink palace above Mexico City’s tree-lined Paseo de la Reforma, the Hotel Marquis Reforma is the epitome of a "boutique" hotel – with one of the best spas in town. With 209 rooms and suites, you have many to views to choose from. Make sure you select one, which faces impressive Chapultepec Castle in what was once a hunting preserve for Aztec nobles and brace yourselves for total pampering.

Should you decide to abandon your posh suite for a while, you’re close to Mexico City’s "Rodeo Drive" and just minutes from the Historic Center, and the Halls of Moctezuma, hub of the ancient Aztec Empire.

Treat yourselves to a couple of zesty Tequilas, tasty botanas (snacks) and nostalgic music at Bar Caviar before nibbling on Mexican delicacies at La Jolla.
