What is Your Feng Shui Kua Number?

In Feng Shui your Kua number is used to determine your most auspicious or inauspicious directions. This number is one of the most important factors to consider in good Feng Shui. I consider a person’s Kua number the starting point for all Feng Shui consultations.

To calculate your Kua number, you need your birth year and gender. All Kua number calculations are based on the Chinese calendar, not the Western calendar so those born between January 1 and February 4 of a given year should use the previous year for their calculation. For example, if you were born January 31, 1940, your birth year for this calculation would be 1939.

The formula for calculating the Kua number for men is:

• Add the last 2 digits of the birth year together and reduce to a single digit.
• If born before the year 2000, subtract this number from 10 and reduce to a single digit.
• If born after the year 2000, subtract this number from 9 and reduce to a single digit.
• The result is your personal or Kua number.
• If the result is 5, use number 8 as your Kua number.

For example:

A male born in 1939 would have a Kua number of 7
3 + 9 = 12 (add last 2 digits of birth year)
1 + 2 = 3 (reduce to a single digit)
10 – 3 = 7 (subtract from 10)

A male born in 2005 would have a Kua number of 4
0 + 5 = 5 (add last 2 digits of birth year)
9 – 5 = 4 (subtract from 9)

The formula for calculating the Kua number for women is:

• Add the last 2 digits of the birth year together and reduce to a single digit.
• If born before the year 2000, add 5 to this number and reduce to a single digit.
• If born after the year 2000, add 6 to this number and reduce to a single digit.
• The result is your personal or Kua number.
• If the result is 5, use number 2 as your Kua number.

For example:

A female born in 1939 would have a Kua number of 8
3 + 9 = 12 (add last 2 digits of birth year)
1 + 2 = 3 (reduce to a single digit)
5 + 3 = 8 (add 5)

A female born in 2005 would have a Kua number of 2
0 + 5 = 5 (add last 2 digits of birth year)
6 + 5 = 11 (add 6)
1 + 1 = 2 (reduce to a single digit)

The number 5 is not used as a Kua number in Feng Shui since the number 5 is at the center of the Bagua with the other numbers alternating around this center position.

Your best direction based on your Kua number

The Kua numbers are divided into 2 groups. The East group is numbers 1, 3, 4, and 9. The West Group is numbers 2, 6, 7, and 8. If your Kua number is in the East group, your best directions are East, Southeast, North and South. If your Kua number is in the West group, your best directions are West, Southwest, Northwest and Northeast.

If you know your best directions, you can create good energy flow for yourself and eliminate quite a few problems. If you are having difficulties sleeping, simply changing the direction of your bed to match your best direction can help. If you are having difficulties at work, changing the direction of your desk can help.
