There have been countless stories and novels written about sisters, a couple of my favorites are Between Sisters, by Kristin Hannah and My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Picoult's novel continues to garner raves, it is now in mass market paperback and a movie. The bond of women to their sisters is often so strong that nothing can come between them. So what happens when that bond is damaged or lost because of a misunderstanding or an argument? Painful estrangement can go on for years and it does more than hurt each sister, it hurts the whole family. How many times have you heard a child say, "my mother does not talk to my aunt." When asked why, the answer is often, "I don't know, they just don't talk." Sadly, the child is telling the truth, he has never been told why mommy does not talk to Auntie. Often the chasm grows until the discomfort spreads to friends and associates.

When a woman is estranged from her sister can the damage be repaired? In June, 2009, a popular ABC newsmagazine show is asking the same question and seeks sisters who haven't communicated in more than a year and who would like to reconnect. The newsmagazine staff will talk to estranged sisters and a communications expert who has been studying sisters and their relationships.
