Portugal’s Regal Hotels

Portugal, a country blessed with a good climate, warm people, divine cuisine and a fascinating history and culture, provides the perfect honeymoon destination. For a unique experience, think about booking a stay in a regal palace which has reconfigured into a posh hotel. Throughout Portugal there are many romantic options to choose from.

The long litany of traditions and love stories that have spanned the ages, serve as a fascinating backdrop for the memorable vacation options which this jewel of a country has to offer.

Starting in the capital, Lisbon’s oldest palace - the Palácio Belmonte - is set in the historical city center on the hill of the impressive São Jorge Castle. Built in 1449, it was originally incorporated only three towers and was built over Roman ruins and close to the “Cerca Moura,” Moorish walls of the city’s ancient quarter. In 1640, a terrace and five classical façades were added and subsequent refurbishing turned it into a small hospitable gem with only 11 suites overlooking the old city.

Also in Lisbon, the five-star Pestana Palace is a 19th century palace restored to its former glory and now classified as a National Monument. There are 187 opulent rooms and suites (four of which are in the original palace), along with lush gardens, a swimming pool and mesmerizing views of the Tagus River.

The Lapa Palace was built in 1870 as the private Residence of the Count of Valença. Today, this aristocratic palace stands proudly on one of Lisbon’s seven hills within the city center and offers stunning views of the Tagus as well as the city, boasting 109 rooms, including 18 suites as well as a Tower Suite and a Royal Suite. The gourmet "Ristorante Hotel Cipriani" serves tasty Italian and Venetian specialties with Portuguese touches while the "Rio Tejo" Bar dishes up light meals, a unique selection of teas, Porto wines and cocktails.

Sintra, a favorite with the royal court of Portugal for centuries, is a short drive from Lisbon and offers several honeymoon havens. Framed on a large square flanked by a medieval palace, fountains, cozy cafés, and antiques shops, the town is like a page torn out of history.

Rising above it from the Serra de Sintra Mountain range you’ll find a 10th century castle and the whimsical 19th century royal Pena Palace. The “piece de resistance” is the 18th century Seteais Palace, now a hotel located just outside of town. With 30 elegant rooms, gorgeous gardens, a pool and six nearby golf courses, it offers something for everyone.

In the lush Buçaco forest rising above the spa town of Luso, is an ancient Carmelite monastery, which was converted into a royal palace a century ago, - then reconverted into a luxury hotel – now the Buçaco Palace Hotel - just years later. Today, the former monastery houses 60 rooms, six suites, a fine restaurant and a renowned wine cellar. Its location makes it the perfect “jumping off” point for visits to:Coimbra, Fatima, Viseu, the Douro Valley and the Atlantic coast.

The Convento do Espinheiro Heritage Hotel & Spa is a luxurious hotel in Evora, a city which has been designated a "World Heritage City" by UNESCO. The building was originally a 15th century convent, which has also been designated a national monument. It currently houses 59 magnificent guest rooms set in a beautiful garden area... The Cisterna Wine Cellar Bar is the place in which to wind down after a day of sightseeing.

Throughout Portugal you’ll find plenty of romantic places in which to spend your honeymoon. The biggest problem you’ll run into….is deciding which one to select.
