I don't know why I have waited so long to say it, but I love Nancy Giles. There I said, now you all know. What is that I love about Nancy Giles you ask. Well, it's the smooth voice, the wild hair (well sometimes) and the fact that she's pretty darn funny without being crude -- funny with a point, not just for the sake of being funny.
If you haven't heard of Nancy Giles I'm not surprised. Even though I've watched her in small roles such movies as Angie (the nurse that assisted Geena Davis's delivery) and on television with Delta Burke, it wasn't until I watched her do a commentary on the CBS Morning Show, where she has been a contributor for over five years, that I took notice of her. Within minutes I wanted to know who she was and listen to more of what she had to say.
Nancy's short and sweet commentaries are centered on social and political politics. She gives the truth as she sees it, and apparently as I see it too, but she does it in a manner that is both respectful and witty. Just so you know, yes, she is plus size -- a size 16 and 6' tall. She would probably say, what does it matter? In the context of this plus size website it does matter. But out in the world it doesn't. In my opinion she is a positive contributor to our society. Her size is not the sole basis of mentioning her but it is an additional perk.
One of my favorite verbal essays by Nancy Giles is "No More Makeovers" where Nancy beckons us to stop watching shows that insist we are not good enough the way we are. You know the ones where crowns, clothing, and perfect makeup are added; and wrinkles, cellulite and excess skin are taken away. It's a few years old but with all the reality television we are being smothered with it is still relevant. This commentary and a few more are viewable on her official website. If you do a search at the CBS Morning Show's official website you'll find many more as well and some of her written contributions. She is even on YouTube (isn't everyone). I highly recommend watching them. She's addicting, I swear.
Nancy Giles is a political commentator, she's a stand up comedian, she's an actress, she's a radio co-host, and she's a writer. The fact that she is plus size makes me love her more. Wouldn't it be nice if the rest of the world were like that? Loved us more because we were plus size? Wow, what a shift that would be.
If Nancy Giles were to have her own show (which I think she should -- hello network producers!) I would watch it religiously every week.
