Maho Bay Camp Honeymoon

Taking a few days away from life in the fast lane might just be the perfect way to spend your honeymoon. How about opting for a Caribbean Island, with all the creature comforts, with a nod to ecology?

Strictly adhering to their basic tenet, “creature comforts for all creatures,” Maho Bay Camps in St. John is an environmentally sensitive resort which began with 18 tent cottages in the Virgin Islands National Park in 1976 and has since blossomed into 114 units, spread through four sister properties with comfort levels, ranging from basic to nearly luxurious.

These self-style pioneers of eco-tourism designed roomy tent-cottages hugging a hill overlooking Maho Bay without sacrificing the delicate eco-system of the idyllic island. The majority of the buildings are powered by solar energy and secluded by lush foliage and feature billowing tents made of translucent fabric, which take advantage of the cooling trade winds scampering across the turquoise bay. Units have screened windows and open-air terraces, many with breathtaking views of the sea, nearby islands and the inevitable spectacular sunsets. Blankets, towels, cooking and eating utensils are all provided. Each tent has its own private deck, electric outlets, lights and fans. Conveniently located bathhouses are nearby.

A five minute walk from Maho Bay's tent-cottages, sister property Harmony Studios offer the same environmental sensitivity, with more creature comforts with larger rooms and private bathrooms.

What’s unique: Elevated walkways connect the camp to avoid soil erosion, which endangers the beach and fragile coral.

What’s cool: Each building uses timers and sensors to maximize the sun’s efficiency and generate much of the Camp’s electricity. Passive solar design, rain collection and roof scoops circulate cooling breezes.

What’s romantic: Get up close and personal with each other - and nature - by exploring this quiet natural playground with the exquisite beauty of the Virgin Islands National Park as a backdrop. Fill your days with snorkeling, scuba diving and beaching – and your nights with romantic a rendezvous under the stars.

What’s to do: Water sports, wind surfing, kayaking and island shopping tours.

What’s to eat: The huge outdoor pavilion restaurant dishes up different “theme” cuisine every night – from Mediterranean to Mexican. Treat your palate to Caribbean curried chicken or jerked steak with fluffy island rice; pasta al dente with shellfish, or get back to basics with prime rib – or the catch of the day.
