Antigua - Family Getaway

Guest Author - Ann Carroll Burgess

To busy to get that quality time with the family youíve been daydreaming about?

Take a break and whisk the family off to The Inn at English Harbour, on the captivating Caribbean island of Antigua, and enjoy some quality time together while creating fun-filled memories that will last a lifetime.

The Inn, ideally situated on Antigua next to the entrance of the historic town of English Harbour, recently finished a dramatic $1.5 million renovation that brought a fresh face to nearly every corner of the colonial-style resort. From Nov 1, 2009 through May 10, 2010, room rates start at $940 a night for the family-friendly junior suite, which includes taxes and service charges. The rate also includes an English breakfast as well as a three-course dinner.

At the Inn families, with children over 10 years old, can spread out and relax in their spacious junior suite in a colonial-style building just the right distance from the resortís infinity-edged swimming pool. The air-conditioned suites feature dark, mahogany floors and handsome wood antiques that evoke the grandeur of colonial days. Lower-floor suites offer a large verandah leading on to lush, peaceful gardens while upper-floor junior suites feature a large terrace/balcony with vaulted ceilings. The rooms have king, queen or twin-sized beds with, high-count Egyptian cotton sheets. Spacious up-to-date bathrooms deliver the indispensable conveniences of modern times with separate toilet and bidet, twin washbasins, and a shower of earthy green slate. Suites also include mini-bars with refrigerator, cable TV, direct dial telephones, and safes Ė as well as new, flat screen televisions, iPod docking stations, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi internet access. Connecting rooms are available.

You can spend a fun, relaxing day with the children on the resortís private, white sand beach, which includes its own private jetty to protect the coastline from the effects of currents or tides. Use the resortís sun-beds and umbrellas to enjoy the warm, Caribbean sun and cooling trade winds while lounging on the beach. Watch the kids as they use the resortís complimentary snorkeling equipment to view life under the sea. Or, take a complimentary kayak out into the quiet harbor waters and enjoy a stunning view of the vast sea and beautiful, wooded coastline. For an extra charge, families can also try water-skiing, scuba diving, sunfish sailing or deep-sea fishing.

Take a family excursion and visit the nearby town of English Harbour, packed with natural beauty and historic legend. Nelsonís Harbor, which was once used by the Royal Navy during the 18th and 19th centuries as its base of operations in the Caribbean Sea, is a popular place to visit. The Clarence House, a residence built for the future King William IV when he served in the Royal Navy, is another historical attraction.

You woníg go hungry at the Inn, restaurant options include casual dining at the Innís Reef Restaurant and Beach Bar, which offers stunning ocean views as well as the occasional Cuban Band or piano music. The open-air pavilion-style venue has been newly remodeled with marble tile flooring and expanded into a more spacious dining and event space. For a more formal dining experience, experience the highly acclaimed Terrace Restaurant, which offers the refined Italian creations of Executive Chef Fred Cougnon.

This could just be the perfect family Thanksgiving Ė no turkey, just wonderful sun-filled days of memories on the beach.
